Collectif Barbare (CH) MAPPING MUSIC THEATRE
Revox – A Tale of Phantoms
Sound engineer Paul Stiller, still only known to a few film enthusiasts, shaped Hollywood’s sound design for over fifty years. The mysterious disappearance of his wife, which filled the newspapers in 1954, remains unexplained to this day. On the occasion of the 2016 Stiller retrospective at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Swiss „Collectif Barbare“ received permission to sift through documents from Stiller’s estate. They unearthed revelations that overturned previous conclusions about this criminal case.
REVOX is a music-theatrical film noir. The audience wears headphones. The performance plays with the audio illusion of binaural microphones. The Hollywood-worthy set of Stiller’s study, realistically reconstructed down to the last detail, is resurrected. And as neither Stiller nor his retrospective in Los Angeles ever existed, it is only phantoms that populate the stage. An exhilarating and multi-layered exploration of the physicality of theatre and the disappearance of the human in virtual space.
