NOVOFLOT

Die Oper #1 – Am Kreis (Für den Anfang) (UA)

Opera owes its birth to the idea of reviving the ideals of classical antiquity. According to Novoflot, the thoughts and goals of its inventors quickly fell victim to the desire of bourgeois representation, and opera was transformed into something it never wanted to be. DIE OPER #1 (the first part of a trilogy to be finished three years from now) leads back to Monteverdi’s »Orfeo« as the beginning of this story. When Monteverdi was rediscovered in the 20th century, it was revealed that fifteen of his operas had disappeared. Novoflot are staging the imaginary rediscovery of these lost stage works and are rewriting the beginning of opera history by creatively reassessing the facts. Monteverdi’s three well-known works serve as a fragmentary puzzle in which the missing elements are gradually inserted.
