La Cage

Un Renversement – von Don Giovanni

From a feminist viewpoint, Alíenor Dauchez and her team from „La Cage“ devote themselves to a deconstruction of “Don Giovanni”. The action is transferred to a porn industry film set, what happens on stage is not always PG rated. Shame becomes an important keyword: who should be ashamed here, why, and for what? In addition to the passive role of Mozart’s women, who are either seduced, deceived, mocked, or abused, their complex psychology comes to the fore. Unexpectedly, the supporting character of the Commendatore emerges from the shadows and reveals himself as an important link in a system dominated by men.

Despite the extremely reduced ensemble, in this reversal („renversement“) almost no scene of the opera is ignored, even if it is only touched upon in turbulent dialogue or in excerpts from opera films, which also reflect the history of the piece’s reception. Historical recordings in original instrumentation are electronically slowed down or distorted at the hands of Marta Zaparolli, other parts of the score are transferred into the realm of old and new instruments (baroque flute, synthesiser) – these are invitations not only to see but also hear “Don Giovanni” anew.
