Even film enthusiasts have rarely heard of Alice Guy-Blaché – in 1896, she shot the first fictional film in history, and over the following two decades she wrote, produced, and directed more than 1,000 works for the cinema, addressing issues such as antisemitism, immigration, the situation of workers, the role of women, and child abuse. Then, as a woman, she was pushed out of the young and rapidly male-dominated business. Most of her films are now lost. Apartment XY looks at Guy-Blaché from the perspective of a person forgotten during her lifetime. The result is an intimate theatrical experience that moves between silent film, soundscape, and musical installation, taking music theater in new directions.
