For more than a year, Matthias Engler and Gunnhildur Einarsdóttir endeavored to reconstruct a lost piece of music—Vis-à-Vis, composed jointly by John Cage, Toru Takemitsu, and the performance duo THE. The theater piece, in which they retrace their quest, uses documentary techniques to take us on a journey back in time to a September evening in 1986 in San Diego, California. For moments, we feel: “This is how it must have been!” Vis-à-Vis is a theater piece in which Engler and Einarsdóttir talk vis-à-vis with people who share memories of a performance that was developed vis-à-vis by various artists and which, because everything must remain speculation, ultimately eludes us. A piece not just about music, but about the closeness and simultaneous remoteness of the past.
