Makiko Nishikaze / Maulwerker

Breakfast Opera

Every morning, everywhere in the world, people eat breakfast – a daily ritual that is tied to individual tastes and cultural influences. For BREAKFAST OPERA, the Berlin-based Japanese composer Makiko Nishikaze asked people from different countries to talk about their breakfast. Based on this information she composed languages, sounds, smells, gestures and pictures. The cultural meets with the individual, contrapuntally or merging, in interrelation of music and theatre action. In this way, this project opens the space for a new perception of the everyday and asks for the motor of our actions.

The Maulwerker, founded in 1977 by composer Dieter Schnebel, are among the pioneers of a new music theater and have remained true to a profile that interweaves elements of performance art, intermedial and conceptual art. BREAKFAST OPERA is their third collaboration with Makiko Nishikaze.
