When it comes to developing new forms of music theatre, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany are equally high in the lead. Unlike in Germany, however, the independent music theatre in Holland and Flanders does not compete with the orchestras and ensembles of a multi-branched city theatre system. Thus, structures of governmental funding have been found here which are offering far greater structural security for the search of new ways in music theatre, while, on the other hand, these remain tied to certain external requirements. As a result, forms of expression in Berlin and Rotterdam differ substantially.

Both of those sides will be discussed and compared. Why is the music theatre of the Netherlands so different from that of Berlin? Where, nevertheless, are their points of contact? What can both learn from each other during their encounter?
