Hauen und Stechen

THE WHALE WHALE SONG (UA)

In the song of the whales, seamen long heard the singing of mermaids. It is a food tone, it is often also a love song, and over enormous distances it helps families to locate their members. Today, however, whales have to learn to sing louder. Dead coral reefs swallow their song instead of reflecting it as they used to. Oil rigs, ship engines, sonars drown out their sound, destroying their orientation and leaving them stranded more and more often.

Hauen und Stechen are engaged in a sensual, emotionally charged theatre that seeks direct contact with the audience, rewrites the repertoire of classical music and confronts it with pop culture. As a tribute to the fading music of the whales, THE WHALE WHALE SONG makes use of all conceivable sources in order to lead deep into the memory of man’s relationship to the whale and, above and beyond this, to nature.
